Finding Strength: How Group Therapy Empowers Church Members

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), every country in the WHO European Region faces challenges in working to promote the mental and emotional well-being of its people.

“It has been a very important experience for me. It helped me understand and ‘digest’ the problem, my feelings, and my reaction. It was a very good experience talking with other sisters that had similar experiences. The teachers/coordinators/facilitators were so kind, understanding, and prepared.”

Emotional resilience is the ability to adapt to stress or challenges, enabling individuals to cope with adversity and maintain well-being. Providing effective care and resources to people in need is essential in helping God’s children.

“The non-judgmental and loving environment accompanied with professional support and teachings have brought me many positive experiences and insights.”

Five Specialised Treatment Groups to Support Church Members

Family Services, a division of the Welfare & Self-Reliance Services department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, helps individuals and families strengthen emotional resilience and self-reliance. Five specialised treatment groups — available primarily online — support church members facing emotional and mental health challenges.

“...The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serves its members on all occasions, and does not leave us alone with our emotional problems. I have only words of gratitude and hope in my heart.”

These treatment groups include Healing from Sexual Abuse, Pornography Addiction, Managing Anxiety and Depression, General Mental Health Skills, and Marriage Relationships (Hold Me Tight). Expanded treatment groups coming soon include Trauma, Youth Anxiety and Depression, Youth Pornography Addiction, and Missionary Adjustment. Some of these expanded groups are already available in selected areas.

“I understood better the reason for my character, reactions, feelings in the face of different circumstances of life. At the same time, it helped me to be able to face them better with the suggestions contained in the course.”

Guidance for Leaders on How to Help Their Members in Need

Involving Church leaders helps ensure that members continue to receive help even after the group sessions have ended. Consultation between leaders and Family Services mental health professionals ensures that individuals are supported before, during, and after.

When a leader consults Family Services about a member, a mental health professional will help to evaluate the best way to assist them. When required, a Family Services professional will conduct a screening with the member. Each situation is unique, and recommendations are made on a case-by-case basis.

Gospel- and Evidence-Based Tools

Family Services' specialised treatment groups provide gospel-based and evidence-based tools for emotional and mental health challenges. As President Russell M. Nelson has said, 'I urge you to take steps to be temporally prepared. But I am even more concerned about your spiritual and emotional preparation.

With proper guidance, participants can strengthen their emotional well-being, find peace and hope through the Saviour, and be able to make and keep sacred covenants.
